TESTOSTERONE THERAPY FOR WOMEN

Testosterone therapy have many potential benefits for both men and women. It makes sense that they would help men, but most people don’t realize that women need testosterone, too.

A woman’s normal total testosterone level is about 1/20 the level of an average male. Testosterone levels in women decline steadily after her 20’s. A woman’s average testosterone level in her 40’s is about half of what it is in her early 20’s.

Replacing testosterone in women can benefit:

  • Low libido
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of strength and muscle mass
  • Poor bone density
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of motivation
  • Depressed mood
  • Menstrual migraine headaches

Options for testosterone replacement for women include:

  1. Testosterone Gel or Cream – A special formulation from a compounding pharmacy that is rubbed into thin skinned areas every day after showering or before bed.
  1. Testosterone Pellet Implants – These are the size of a cooked long grain of rice. One or two are painlessly inserted under the skin of the lateral buttocks every 3-to-6 months. Testosterone is slowly released with more hormone released when needed like when working out.

Testosterone pellets are a simple and convenient treatment option for women who seek testosterone replacement therapy. Your body uses the implanted bioidentical testosterone just like natural testosterone and will convert some of it to estrogen—which explains why testosterone supplementation may help lessen the symptoms of menopause. You might see results within a week or two of implantation with most individuals reaching peak serum levels around six weeks. A major benefit of pellets is that they offer a steady, sustained release of hormones instead of fluctuating levels that can occur with creams.

Because we lack evidence from full-scale clinical trials, it is impossible to say with certainty that testosterone pellets are safe for every woman. They are not currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of menopausal symptoms in women, but testosterone pellets are used safely in women all over the world with minimal side effects. Side effects, when they do occur, are most often acne or unwanted body hair growth that resolves with lowering of the testosterone dose.
