Hormone Disruptors

Hormone disruptors, or endocrine disruptors, are chemicals that can interfere with the normal functioning of the endocrine system, which regulates hormones in the body. These substances can mimic, block, or alter natural hormones, leading to potential health issues. Many hormonal issues today such as PCOS, endometriosis, and PMDD in women and low testosterone levels in men, can be attributed to these endocrine disruptors.

‍

Common examples include:

  • Phthalates: Found in plastics, personal care products, and some cleaning agents. They can affect reproductive health and development.
  • Bisphenol A (BPA): Often used in plastics and resins. It can mimic estrogen and has been linked to various health problems.
  • Pesticides: Some pesticides can act as hormone disruptors, impacting reproductive and developmental health.
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): These industrial chemicals were used in electrical equipment and can accumulate in the environment and body, affecting thyroid hormones and other functions.

‍

Exposure to these disruptors can come from food, water, air, and consumer products. The potential health effects can vary but may include reproductive problems, developmental issues, and increased risk of certain cancers. Reducing exposure involves making choices like using less plastic, choosing organic foods, and using natural cleaning products.

‍

Here are some practical steps to help reduce your exposure:

  1. Choose Organic Foods: Opt for organic fruits and vegetables when possible. Organic farming typically uses fewer synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Look up the dirty dozen and the clean fifteen as an initial guide of where to start.
  2. Choose hormone free meat and dairy products:  Look for grass fed, grass finished beef, organic chicken, eggs and milk as these typically have a high level of hormones and antibiotics that are passed on to the consumer.  Look for terms like organic feed, which is free from GMOs, synthetic pesticides, and herbicides, pasture raised, free range, hormone free, no antibiotics ever.
  3. Wash Produce: Even if you buy non-organic produce, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly can help reduce pesticide residues.
  4. Filter Drinking Water: Use a water filter that is certified to remove chemicals such as chlorine, lead, and other contaminants. This can help reduce exposure to endocrine disruptors found in tap water.
  5. Avoid Plastics: Reduce your use of plastic containers and bottles, especially those labeled with recycling codes 3 (polyvinyl chloride, or PVC) and 7 (which can include various types of plastics, including those with BPA). Instead, use glass, stainless steel, or other non-plastic alternatives. If using plastic, never heat it such as in the microwave or dishwasher.  Do not drink coffee through plastic lids.
  6. Be Cautious with Personal Care Products: Check labels for potentially harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Opt for products labeled as free of these substances.
  7. Choose Natural Cleaning Products: Use cleaning products with fewer toxic chemicals. Look for natural or eco-friendly brands that are free from harsh chemicals.
  8. Use Safe Cookware: Avoid non-stick pans and opt for stainless steel, cast iron, or glass cookware. Non-stick coatings can contain chemicals that may leach into food.
  9. Be Mindful of Furniture and Household Items: Some furniture, carpets, and other household items can contain flame retardants or other chemicals that are endocrine disruptors. Look for products labeled as low in these chemicals or certified as safe.
  10. Ventilate Your Home: Ensure good ventilation, especially if you use products that can release chemicals into the air, such as paints or cleaning agents.
  11. Check for Pesticides in Your Yard: If you use pesticides or herbicides in your garden, consider switching to organic or non-toxic alternatives.

‍

By taking these steps, you can help reduce your exposure to endocrine disruptors and contribute to a healthier hormonal environment.
